Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is the examination of the uterine cavity
by means of a thin optical telescope. Abnormal conditions,
such as polyps, fibroids and scarring may be readily diagnosed.
The procedure uses a hysteroscope, a slender optical instrument
that is inserted into the uterus through the cervix. The
scope may be rigid or flexible. A small quantity of saline,
carbon dioxide gas or Hyskon (a high molecular weight dextran)
is introduced to distend and expand the uterine cavity.
The cavity is then visualized utilizing a video camera connected
to the hysteroscope.
The procedure may be easily performed in a doctor's office
with appropriate equipment.
